Nursing Note: Cannabis Therapy for Arthritis

Understanding Arthritis:

Arthritis is a disorder of the joints characterized by inflammation, pain, and stiffness around the joints. There are many different types of arthritis, but the most common are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis (OA) occurs when the protective cartilage on the ends of your bones has worn away. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) takes place when your immune system mistakenly attacks your own body’s tissues..

Cannabis as a treatment for arthritis:

Cannabis can effectively reduce arthritic pain and inflammation through its immune-modulation and anti-inflammatory properties. Cannabis also helps individuals decrease their intake and reliance on opiates. The combined effects of THC and CBD can provide significant relief for arthritis patients.

Cannabis Remedies for Arthritic Symptoms:

Verdes Salve

Verdes Salve in one and two ounce options

The Verdes Foundation carries a THC salve that is highly effective in treating arthritic pain. This product is made in-house at Verdes. It is a concentrated and potent formula that penetrates the skin, providing immediate topical relief. The salve does not produce any psychoactive effects making salve a great option for patients who need pain relief with out the “head high”.

Your Salve Options

Regular salve has menthol which results in a cooling sensation and acts as a counterirritant to reduce the sensation of pain. This salve also has eucalyptus oil which is analgesic and anti-inflammatory. The menthol works on aching muscles because it triggers a process called vasodilation (the dilatation of blood vessels, which decreases blood pressure). The regular salve is the best option for optimal pain relief due to the menthol and eucalyptus combination.

Our sensitive skin salve does not have menthol and instead uses lavender and arnica. Lavender is known to aid in pain relief of sore and tense muscles and joint pain relief while arnica is used for its anti-inflammatory properties. Those with sensitive skin may find the sensation of menthol to be irritating or the smell of cannabis + menthol to be too heavy. The sensitive skin salve is a good option for you.

Tips for using salve:

Warm your skin before application of the salve. Warming the skin opens the pores and allows for better penetration of the salve.

Rub the salve on and around the painful area, extending it at least two inches around the injured area. This will help with any radiating pain and ensure the entirety of the affect area is treated.

After application wait 15 minutes before you let the area touch clothing. This allows the salve time to absorb into your skin. Remember, it is possible that the salve could stain your clothing due it the oils in the ingredients.
